Procrastination antidote – If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing half baked

This website, and in fact, my entire cartooning efforts to-date are brought to you thanks to the power of the phrase ‘If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing half-baked’. I was introduced to this counter-intuitive phrase by a supervisor on a counselling placement a couple of years ago. I find the phrase really useful.

The half-baked approach

I occasionally (ahem) suffer from perfectionist tendencies. The desire for perfection can be a fantastic excuse to put off a task until later, until…I can do it perfectly. However, it’s useful to realise that whilst I may always want to do things to the best of my ability – that doesn’t mean I need to aim for perfection. Indeed, I don’t think I’ve ever achieved perfection in anything…ever. I’m not even sure it’s possible.

If the best I can do is ‘half-baked’ then that’s what I need to do.

That’s especially the case if something is important. Sometimes when things are important it can feed my desire for perfection. I want to do the important things perfectly. But if I flip that idea on its head I can see that if something is really important I need to start working on it NOW. It’s so important that I need to take action, I need to get going, I need to give it my attention. If it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing, even if the best I can do is half-baked. No-one is going to be a perfect parent – but it’s worth doing – so be the best parent you can for your child even if that’s half-baked. No-one is going to be a perfect friend – but it’s worth doing – so be the best friend that you can even if that’s half-baked.

The worst thing you can do with the important stuff is not do it. Trying to do it perfectly can accidently take you down this path.

My original plan with my drawing was to become a good illustrator, and then start my cartooning. This would have taken years. So instead I just thought about the phrase. My cartooning is important to me. It’s totally worth doing. In fact, it’s so well-aligned to my values, to the person I want to be, to my desire to ‘walk the talk’ that it’s worth doing in any way that I can – half baked, boot strapped, just-about-fit-for-purpose, mediocre… they all work for me.

So welcome to my website full of mediocre drawings that I find perfectly worth doing.  One observation before I go – cake mix tastes great straight from the bowl.
